The History of Lincoln
The Dream Becomes a Business
Ford Motor Company entered the business world on June 16, 1903, when Henry Ford and 11 business associates signed the company's articles of incorporation. With $28,000 in cash, the pioneering industrialists gave birth to what was to become one of the world's largest corporations. Few companies are as closely identified with the history and development of industry and society throughout the 20th century as Ford Motor Company.

As with most great enterprises, Ford Motor Company's beginnings were modest. The company had anxious moments in its infancy. The earliest record of a shipment is July 20, 1903, approximately one month after incorporation, to a Detroit physician. With the company's first sale came hope—a young Ford Motor Company had taken its first steps.

Mass Production on the Line
Perhaps Ford Motor Company's single greatest contribution to automotive manufacturing was the moving assembly line. First implemented at the Highland Park plant (in Michigan, US) in 1913, the new technique allowed individual workers to stay in one place and perform the same task repeatedly on multiple vehicles that passed by them. The line proved tremendously efficient, helping the company far surpass the production levels of their competitors—and making the vehicles more affordable.

The First Vehicles

Henry Ford insisted that the company's future lay in the production of affordable cars for a mass market. Beginning in 1903, the company began using the first 19 letters of the alphabet to name new cars. In 1908, the Model T was born. 19 years and 15 million Model T's later, Ford Motor Company was a giant industrial complex that spanned the globe. In 1925, Ford Motor Company acquired the Lincoln Motor Company, thus branching out into luxury cars, and in the 1930's, the Mercury division was created to establish a division centered on mid-priced cars. Ford Motor Company was growing.

Becoming a Global Company
In the 50's came the Thunderbird and the chance to own a part of Ford Motor Company. The company went public and, on Feb. 24, 1956, had about 350,000 new stockholders. Henry Ford II's keen perception of political and economic trends in the 50's led to the global expansion of FMC in the 60's, and the establishment of Ford of Europe in 1967, 20 years ahead of the European Economic Community's arrival. The company established its North American Automotive Operations in 1971, consolidating U.S., Canadian, and Mexican operations more than two decades ahead of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Ford Motor Company started the last century with a single man envisioning products that would meet the needs of people in a world on the verge of high-gear industrialization. Today, Ford Motor Company is a family of automotive brands consisting of: Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Volvo. The company is beginning its second century of existence with a worldwide organization that retains and expands Henry Ford's heritage by developing products that serve the varying and ever-changing needs of people in the global community.

Lincoln COMPANY REVIEW - Lincoln Mercury Acquires "Magic" Touch With Earvin Johnson Marketing Realtionship

DEARBORN, Mich., July 15, 2003-Lincoln Mercury, two of America's legendary automotive brands, announced today a multi-year marketing relationship with another American classic, NBA champion and successful entrepreneur Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Through an exclusive relationship with Lincoln Mercury, Johnson will appear in national broadcast and print advertisements, primarily focused on the Lincoln brand. In addition, Lincoln Mercury plans to work with Magic Johnson on other marketing programs. The first of these will be the "A Midsummer Night's Magic" charity event from July 24-27 in Los Angeles.

"A relationship with Magic Johnson represents a fantastic opportunity for Lincoln Mercury to associate with a class act," said Darryl Hazel, president of Lincoln Mercury. "Not only is Magic a brilliant athlete, he is a successful businessman and a great humanitarian who gives back to his community. Magic Johnson stands for the same things we do at Lincoln Mercury: American style, sophistication and a spirit of generosity."

Magic Johnson said, "I am very excited to be associated with Lincoln Mercury's all-star lineup of vehicles."

Johnson has proven it is possible to do good things and make money at the same time. "Working with an organization like Ford Motor Company with a proven commitment in giving back to urban communities is a key priority for me. Ford has an exemplary history in empowering minorities with information that builds personal wealth and improves the economic health of our communities. This demonstrated commitment makes Lincoln Mercury an ideal associate," said Johnson.

In addition to ads, Lincoln Mercury plans to work with Magic Johnson on future marketing programs. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"This relationship with Magic Johnson is about much more than an advertising campaign," said John Fitzpatrick, general marketing manager of Lincoln Mercury. "This is a multi-level relationship that provides Lincoln Mercury and our dealers new ways to connect with our customers."

Johnson, a native of Lansing, Mich., attended Michigan State University, where he led the Spartans to the 1979 NCAA Championship. Drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers that same year, Johnson went on to become one of the NBA's greatest players over his 13-year career. He played on five championship teams, and won the Most Valuable Player Award and the Finals MVP Award three times each. A member of the NBA Hall of Fame, Johnson also won a gold medal with the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

Off the court, Johnson has launched a new career as a businessman with the objective of revitalizing and providing quality entertainment and services to neglected urban communities. Through Johnson Development Corp., Johnson has collaborated with Starbucks, T.G.I. Friday's and Loews Cineplex Entertainment to launch outlets and multiplex movie theaters in under served metropolitan areas. In addition to Johnson Development Corp., Johnson also heads Magic Johnson Foundation, Magic Johnson Enterprises and Magic Johnson Entertainment.

Ford Motor Company marks its centennial year in 2003, and Lincoln Mercury has been a part of Ford since 1922. Lincoln Mercury offers a range of upscale and luxury vehicles, including the Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln Aviator and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs, as well as the Lincoln LS, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis, Marauder and Sable sedans.
